Introducing the CRREM Pathways

CRREM (Carbon Risk Real Estate Monitor) is a science-based framework that helps property investors and managers assess the climate risk of their real estate portfolios. It provides decarbonization pathways that show whether buildings are aligned with global climate targets.

CRREM began as a research initiative funded by the EU Horizon 2020 Project. The project brought together leading academic institutions and industry partners to develop a robust methodology for assessing stranding risk in real estate.

In 2024, the CRREM Foundation was established to safeguard the public use and scientific integrity of the CRREM Pathways. The Foundation ensures that the methodology remains accessible, transparent, and aligned with the latest climate science.

CRREM's science-based decarbonization pathways reflect the emissions and energy intensity levels that buildings must meet to stay aligned with a 1.5°C warming scenario under the Paris Agreement. These pathways serve as benchmarks against which property performance can be measured.

The pathways are derived from global carbon budgets and sector-specific allocation methodologies. They account for the real estate sector's share of global emissions and translate this into actionable targets for different property types and locations.

The CRREM Pathways cover a wide range of property types—including offices, retail, residential, logistics, and hotels—across 44 countries. This comprehensive coverage allows investors to benchmark their entire portfolios against consistent, science-based targets.
